So it’s finally happened, the format wars are over and some camp has lost several billion dollars. The loser is HD DVD. They already were heading towards defeat when several studios switch to the other camp, but the largest and probably the fatal blow came when Walmart announced that they would be phasing out HD DVDs on their shelves to be completely replaced by Blu-Ray disks.
Toshiba, the backer of HD DVD, has announced it is discontinuing production of their HD DVD players. Microsoft and Toshiba just recently released a joint statement announcing that they are ceasing the production of HD… Continue reading

DigiTimes has reported that manufacturers of Blu-ray and HD-DVD drives have had to cut back on production because of a serious shortage of blue laser diodes. This means that the expected pre-Holiday flood of such devices onto the consumer market may not happen. DigiTimes is also claiming that Sony, which is one of a handful of companies making the diodes right now, just suspended shipments to other companies so they’ll have enough Blu-ray drives for the PlayStation 3. It’s not entirely clear how this is going to affect the balance of power in… Continue reading

If you read the preview from Engadget and the picture above, you probably have already guessed that the projector screen is transparent. I don’t know how those brilliant scientists in Japan do it, but they never cease to… Continue reading

“If you can look past the circa-1999 Cinema Display design and the 4:3 aspect ratio, OPPO Digital’s new LT-2007 LCD TV/DVD Player Combo doesn’t look too incredibly shabby. Beyond the obvious DVD playback provided by the display’s base, there are VGA, Component and S-Video inputs for use with a general selection of 480i/p, 720p and 1080i devices…”

“Integra introduced its Viiv-based NVS-.7.7 Media Center PC today, aiming it squarely at custom installers who want to get their customers up and running with minimum hassle. They’ll have to pay for that convenience, of course — an even three grand — but that’ll buy ‘em a pretty beefy system, including a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 D820 processor, 1GB RAM, 400GB hard drive, and both digital ATSC and analog NTSC tuners, not to mention the usual plethora of ports.”… Read on at… Continue reading

Well, just when I thought HDTVs couldn’t get bigger, Mitsubishi proved me wrong. They constructed a 8,066 square-foot display in at the Tokyo Racecourse in Japan.

Of course if you want one, it will burn a $28 million hole in your wallet. But for someone like Bill Gates who has the money and space to hold such a TV, it might be just a worthwhile investment to watch the next FIFA World Cup on.

“Should TDK achieve their target, this new Blu-ray disc will offer 4 times the capacity of the current largest BDs. We reckon this monumental ambition will be achieved soon, as TDK had already unveiled a 100GB prototype last May.”Full Article at Ubergizmo.
Wow man, that is insane! And I thought the capacity Blu-ray disks currently offered was a lot! If TDK succeeds, then you can back-up your entire hard drive just to one disk!

Well here is something interesting. Apparently Hitachi has made DVD discs that are very thin, about 92 micrometers thick that can hold 9.4 gb. If you stack a bunch of them together, you can get a 1 terabyte optical disk array that is still a reasonable size. More at the Engadget.com link above.
