Rogers intensifies throttling of P2P traffic

Today I decided to sit down, and download the latest Knoppix distro to play around with. The fastest way to get this distribution was to download it through the Bittorrent protocol. Note, this is completely legal. The distro is offered free by the developers.

What did I notice when I started downloading it? Well, my download was at a crawl, about 10 kb/s, while my upload rarely went above 4 kb/s. I double-checked that the data encryption was enabled, because in the past, it was what got me through Rogers throttling. It was. Puzzled, I headed over to dslreports.com’s Rogers forum to see what’s up.

According to the latest rumours (rumours because the Rogers technical support staff is pretty clueless as to what occurs in their own company), Rogers has throttled P2P traffic in the Toronto area so they can test their newest tier of service called Rogers Yahoo High Speed Elite. Also, there are rumours that currently existing tiers will get speed bumps, although considering Rogers’ past history, they never look at the best interests of their customers.

So what do all of you out there who want to download through Bittorrent and other P2P protocols to do? How do you get your speed back up? Well I’m going to offer you the answer, no matter what purpose you use it for, legal or illegal. I am not responsible for your actions. Ok well the only thing to do now is get your data tunneled through a VPN connection.

A free service that I’m using right now is secureix.com. It’s pretty good, and when you sign up for their VPN/email account, check the inbox of your SecureIX email account to get a link for detailed instructions as to how to connect to their VPN network, and to get your speeds back to normal.
