Lite-on announces LX-2B1U external Blu-ray writer

Ah, another Blu-ray writer announced. This time it’s an external version of Lite-on’s internal Blu-ray writer (yet to be released). This new external writer will be utilizing USB 2.0 (guess firewire is a bit pricey), and can handle both single and dual layer recordable (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE) discs at 2x speed. That may not seem that fast, but consider this. The Blu-ray disc will be huge, so the burner at that speed will be writing the same amount of data per second as a DVD-burner writing a DVD at 40x or more. Even better is the promise that it will be able to burn DVD±R/RW. However I am disappointed that there is no CD-R/RW support announced as of yet (I burn a lot of music CDs). Lite-on says that the burner will be released ”toward the start 2007″. The price is yet to be announced, but it won’t be cheap (probably run you $500 USD or more) and the empty discs won’t be cheap either.
